Running lights...
Posted: Mon Dec 20, 2004 12:49 pm
I have no experience with running with a light on my head. I saw the Petzl E43P2 Tikka LED Headlamp advertised on the sidebar of this site and it looked pretty good. I am wondering if any of you have ever tried something like that. I have two head lamps, but they are not LED and also are heavier (both have a battery pack that holds 4 AA batteries). I wear them on my head out in the woods, but only walking. I don't know this, but I'm almost positive that the ones I have would be too heavy to run in (they would probably slide down my head or something). That is why the LED seemed like a natural. The Petzl advertised only has 3 LED's though. That seems pretty weak. Anyway, I welcome any suggestions as I abandon the treamill in January to run in the early morning darkness outdoors. Thanks!

The LEDs in all headlamps I've seen are quite bright, I doubt you'll have any complaints about the brightness. What's probably more important is to get a headlamp that's specifically made for runners, so it's snug and won't fall off. A headlamp made for backpackers may not be tight enough, and slide off your forehead once you start bounding down the street. I'm pretty sure the Petzl model advertised here is made with runners in mind, so it should be snug.
Of course, there's always the low-tech solution of running with a flashlight in your hand.
