training over the holidays Posted: Mon Dec 20, 2004 3:36 pm

With the holidays, parties, travel, etc. coming up in the next two weeks, it's tough to stay on a regular training plan. Especially if you travel, it can be hard to find good running routes in a city you're not familiar with. Just finding time for the runs can be tough too. Do you think most people will hang up their running shoes until January, or use some tricks to squeeze in runs in unlikely places and times?

My wife and I are actually heading to Mammoth ski resort over the new year and I plan on hitting some cross-country ski trails while we're there. Otherwise, I'm keeping my normal, 5 day running schedule so I can burn off all the junk I will likely jam down my throat.

It's gonna be hard to get the mileage in, what with kids out of school and parties and family events and conflicting schedules and all. I think my best bet's going to be early mornings while everyone else is sleeping in. The downside is that I'll never get to sleep in!

I plan on training as usual whether out of town or not. My only concession is that on Christmas I will forgo the normal early morning run and do it in the afternoon. I don't want the kids up early eager to open presents Christmas morning and have their mother tell them "you have to wait until Daddy gets back from his run. You know how important it is to him!" :o)

Yeah, that would definitely go over like a lead balloon. But maybe you could make up some story about needing to go help Santa pull his sleigh out of a snowbank...
