Pro Marathoner To Appear on "The Bachelorette"
Submitted by ginger :: Tue Dec 21, 2004 2:35 pm
The crossovers from professional sports to reality TV will continue next month when a professional marathoner appears as a contestant on ABC's "The Bachelorette". 29-year-old Josh Cox will be one of 25 men competing for bachelorette Jen Schefft's hand when the eight-episode series premieres January 10. Many of his fellow competitors on the show couldn't belive Cox was a professional runner. Said one, "'I didn't even know people did that for a living!"

Cox, who swam competitively in his youth, set a personal best marathon time of 2:13 at the 2000 Chicago Marathon. He had planned to run the New York Marathon last month, but backed out after he learned he'd been selected for the ABC reality TV series. Cox plans to run a spring 2005 marathon, and eventually hopes to make the jump to traithlon and race professionally at Ironman Hawaii.

Deemed charismatic and "a Brad Pitt look-alike" by those who know him, Cox would appear to be an ideal contestant. He declined to reveal how long he lasted on the show, saying only "It was an absolutely awesome experience. I had a blast. It was a pretty surreal experience." Come January 10, it's a good bet that a lot of the running community will be glued to their television sets.

I don't know if marathon running is really seen as a "cool guy" (or girl) sport. We'll see if this raises awareness... probably only if he wins! In any case, I'm sure he'll get more press from being even middling on this show than doing really well in big marathons.

There are so many of these reality shows anyway now it's hard for any one of them to draw much attention. Do a lot of people really watch "the bachelorette"?
