twice a day runs Posted: Wed Dec 22, 2004 2:01 pm

The past summer I built up to a peak of 75 miles per week, a new high for me. To fit that in with my work schedule required me to do two runs a day a couple of days a week. Typically I'd run 6 miles at lunch time, then another 6 miles around 7:00pm or so. It was kind of a pain, but the only way I found to make it work.

At what mileage level do other people think it's best to start doing two-a-day workouts? Do you think two runs of 6 miles is better, worse, or the same as a single run of 12 miles as far as the training benefit goes?

I have heard that two 45 minute runs is better than one 90 minute run for your "easy" days. There are days when the focus is to go medium-long or long, in which case you wouldn't want to split up the run, but on other days I think it's better to do two-a-days than to do one longer run. I read this somewhere and will look for the source.

I found some good info on Pfitzinger's web site: Should you run twice per day?
