How did your training go this week... did the holidays throw a monkey wrench into your plans? What's in store for you next week?

I did 39 miles this week on 4 days of running, which was about what I'd planned. Running fewer days but more miles per day seems to be working well for me. Today's 16 miler in the morning's gray mist felt great!

I need to start bumping up my weekly mileage if I'm going to do a spring marathon, but next week it'll be tough for me to fit the workouts in. I also need to fit the Runworks 5 Mile Virtual Race in there somewhere this week. I'll probably run about the same as I did this week, then begin ramping up more when January hits.

40 miles, right where I wanted to be! ;-) 3 10-milers and a couple of 5's. 45 for the next two weeks, 50 for the two after that, and then I'm ready to kick off formal training for a 5/29 marathon during that last week of January. Trying to keep the miles nice and easy, but should probably throw in at least a couple of tempo runs over the next month so I don't forget how.

Wow, I don't think I'd have the patience to start training now for a 5/29 marathon. When I miss my goals, I feel more like getting back up and trying again immediately, even though that's probably unwise. Like repeatedly slamming your head in a door or something. I was actually eyeing the Napa marathon on March 6, which is only a little over two months away.

No, I haven't run a 20-miler since October. I'd rather go through another full 18-week training cycle, really boost my speed and fitness levels, and go in confident that I'm more than ready to make my 3:20 goal, rather than go in underprepared and hoping that my karma is better that day than it was the last time. And truthfully, there's no way I could get in the 3 or 4 20-milers I'd want as a minimum before my next marathon AND be able to taper effectively in just the next 9 weeks or so. Also, I've got no track for intervals or really even any good footing for tempo runs this time of year, other than the treadmill. So I'll just relax and try to enjoy the winter with a good period of base building, maybe run a few short "freezeroo" races, and worry about the faster stuff in April when the ground starts to reappear.

You, on the other hand, are already running 16-milers barely 3 weeks after your last marathon, and could far more easily be in good shape by 3/6. Three hard efforts in 4.5 months, though? Don't get hurt or sick...it won't be worth it.
