Family and Friends Running Support Posted: Sat Jan 01, 2005 4:16 pm

Do your family and friends support your running, and encourage you when you enter races and things? Or do you mostly get input like "don't push yourself too hard", "don't hurt yourself", and my favorite "I don't even like to DRIVE that far" when you talk to them? I don't expect everyone to be a running fan or even to have an interest in it really, but it's a bit annoying how some people seem to take every opportunity to tell you how they think running is stupid and/or dangerous. As if your time would be much better spent watching reality TV reruns or something...

My family generally supports whatever I want to do. I haven't received any negativity from my husband or son they seem to think it's great ( maybe a little crazy) that I actually want to go out in the freezing cold!

It's a mixed bag. My wife thinks it's great that I run since it's good for my health. It doesn't interfere with my other priorities in life since I run very early in the morning. But since money is (always) so tight, it's touchy when I need to replace my shoes much less buy technical running clothes (the odd "dri-star" from Wal-Mart), pay entry fees, hotel, etc. Then it would be "all about me" I guess. You can't really win. So I just keep on running!

As I've posted before, my wife runs too, so the support around our house is staggering, but I get the feeling that my immediate family thinks it's a little bit crazy. My favorite quote from an aunt: "You don't need to run - you're already skinny!"

Um, well, that's because I run. And explaining that I run for more than just health reasons completely stymies them, after which they usually heap more ice cream into a bowl and shuffle back to the television.

Too funny! Your half marathon in Ireland in March sounds fantastic. My wife's heavy on Irish ancestry, and I've promised myself that someday I'll take her there. I hear airfares to Ireland are very low at the moment, but I don't think it's going to happen for us for a while. Maybe for a 50th birthday present for her.

We're really looking forward to it. We visited a couple of years ago and fell in love with the green isle (home of 1/2 of my ancestry). The marathon runs through the western countryside near Galway and promises to be beautiful.

I highly recommend sweeping the wife away on a trip...plus, there are gorgeous mountain trail runs for you to escape to if you please : )
