dismal training week Posted: Fri Jan 07, 2005 1:12 pm

Ack, my training has not been going well this week. We've had nothing but rain, rain, and rain since before Christmas, which isn't much fun to run in. Somewhere around the new year I caught a nasty chest cold which has plagued me ever since. Tuesday and Wednesday my runs went pretty poorly, and yesterday I skipped a planned recovery run to get some more rest and hopefully feel better.

Well today was supposed to be a 9 mile run with 4 miles at tempo pace, but I became totally unravelled. About 1.5 miles into the 4 mile tempo section, I just stopped. No energy, I felt dead on my feet, and I didn't think the workout was helping me any. Then I walked the west of the way home (in the rain). Blech. It's all pretty discouraging. On the bright side, as I glance out the window now I can see a bit of blue sky among the clouds.

Sorry to hear you're having such a tough time lately. The big weather news on the east coast is that the west coast is going to get drenched for a while. 120 inches or rain expected, and 10 feet of snow in northern regions...could that really be true?

I'd believe it. Over New Year's weekend, there was supposedly 9 feet of snow in the Lake Tahoe area. We've had nearly continuous rain here in San Francisco for the past two weeks or so now, and it's definitely getting OLD. Of course, it's still better than -36 degrees or whatever psulli was running in!

Today was my bad day. 10 miles at easy pace, after a rest day yesterday. It should have been a walk in the park, but I'd just finished shoveling the driveway, wet snow was coming down hard making footing slippery, and I think I'm still tired from running hill repeats on the treadmill on Thursday while trying to stave off treadmill boredom. I was beat when I got home, and now I think maybe I'm coming down with a cold. And I need to run 13 tomorrow to hit my planned mileage for the week. We'll see whether that happens or not. At least the sun is supposed to shine tomorrow! I'm going to bed early.

If I were you...I'd make sure to drink plenty of fluids and take some extra Vitamin C. This seems to help me if I start doing it just as I sense a cold coming on...then the cold either never happens or is very mild.

Thanks for the suggestion. My doctor made a believer out of me re the "plenty of fluids" guideline, although he phrased it as: "I want you to drink so much water that you're going to the bathroom so often that you're cursing my name." So I treat colds just like hydrating in the days prior to a marathon, and it does seem to make a world of difference, doesn't it?
