I went down to my friendly neighborhood (wrong way running) track today for an interval workout. I was surprised to see there was a class playing soccer on the infield, since it was raining. But I was even more surprised when the coach came over and told me I had to leave! I've been running there more than a year, and it's the first time anyone ever complained. According to the coach, the public is only permitted on the track outside of regular school hours.
So I had to go run my intervals on some hilly sidewalks. Definitely not ideal, but it certainly made for an interesting change.

Well, I certainly would have been frustrated. But, at the same time I understand that the school as a responsibility for the safety of the children and when they're outside they're very exposed. So, I'm sure it wasn't a "power trip" thing, but rather he was just following school policy.
I'm not sure about other school districts but most I know of require strangers entering the school to go straight to the office and register and wear an ID sticker if they are going to be walking through the school. In fact, our district (because we're so close to NYC) has put up fenses around a lot of the schools where they didn't exist before and all doors our locked from the outside. Visitors have to buzz an intercom to be let in. Everyone around here fully accepts this level of security.
You might want to stop by the school office some time and inquire if you could get permission to be on the track during school ours if you first stop in, register, and get a special pass (sounds juvenile, I know) and then you could show your pass to the teacher.

Yeah, I wasn't too upset... I understand why the school has that policy. I was just surprised that I'd never heard about it before today. In the future I'll be sure to schedule my track workouts before school hours if at all possible.
Maybe the fact that I had to climb a fence to get to the track should have tipped me off! :-) But in my defense, it's more of a decorative fence (maybe three feet high?), and I see dozens of other people doing the same thing whenever I'm there, so it seems to be accepted practice.
