US men's half marathon championship this weekend Posted: Tue Jan 11, 2005 12:24 pm

The men's national half marathon championship is this weekend in Houston. Dan Browne looks to be the favorite. Anyone know if it will be televised?

I wish there were a cable channel devoted to running. Around here we get to see the NY Marathon, maybe the Milrose games, and one or two other events, but that's it.

I can't find any mention of TV coverage for this event. If there is coverage it's probably just local to the Houston area.

I still have 6 hours of the 2004 NYC Marathon on my TIVO (5 hours of local NBC coverage and 1 hour of national coverage). I plan to edit out all the commercials, burn it to DVD(s) and replay it next fall just before the 2006 Marathon.

The broadcast I find most motivational is the Hawaii Ironman coverage in the fall. NBC really over-dramatizes it, but I love it. I have to say I find it hard to watch their entire Ironman program without getting choked up, especially during the parts focusing on the struggles of the mid-packers finishing in the dark. If that doesn't get you fired up and ready to race, I don't know what will.

how bout the guy this year that got hit by a media motorcycle and busted up his bike. he had to walk the last six miles of the bike carrying his mangled cycle, running the last few yards to get in under the clock, then set out for the marathon that he reduced to awkwardly walking a large portion of, only to have to sprint (quite an ugly and painful looking sprint) to get in under the final clock. that really was inspiring.

The race is over, and Dan Browne was successful, in a way. He won the US Half-Marathon Champion title, but he actually lost the race to another runner from Kenya. That's got to be a little discouraging. Browne's time was 1:03:17. Now I could certainly never dream of running anywhere near that fast, but that actually seems a little slow to me to be a national title time. That's the equivalent of about a 2:12:35 marathon. Amazing for mortals, but a good bit short of the top elite times.
