running hats
Posted: Wed Jan 19, 2005 10:27 am
I've started running more often with a baseball-style hat, because I've got a lot less hair than I used to, and I worry about sunburn on my head and face. Even the hi-tech running hats seem to keep my head warmer than I'd like, though. Anyone else run regularly with headgear? Maybe I should try a bandana?

I used to shave my head and loved this hat from ascics:

It actually looks better than the one i have, but i don't wear a hat now, except winter hats this time of year...

I wear a baseball-style cap all the time for the same reason but mostly because it also helps to keep sweat from dripping down my forehead and into my eyes; it has moisture wicking fabrick at the crown to help channel moisture away. When ever I run without it I have to use my shirt to help wipe sweat from my eyes. I've never felt that it made my head warm. If the hat you're wearing isn't made of the special breathable material (not cottom) then give that a try.

I think part of the problem may be that my hat is black, and so absorbs more heat from the sun. It's a Nike hat made specifically for running, sewn of dry-weave or some similar fabric.

Was that a typo...did he mean silly headgear? But hey, you go with what works. Right?

Actually, I was hoping I could find a photo of my old orthodontic headgear, but I knew that wouldn't do much for Rickshaw's woefully balding pate, so I thought this one might provide him with more protection from the sun!

I guess the best description of my running hat is a "fishing" hat. It has enough of a brim to shade my eyes and ears.
