Age-Graded Race Posted: Mon Jan 24, 2005 7:39 pm

I see more and more races are providing Age-Graded results so you can compare your performance relative to everyone else. Kind of like the handicap system in Golf. But I have yet to see a race where the awards are based upon age-graded results. Are there any races out there that do this?

I know there is a formula used to determine this but apparently either it isn't trusted or no one wants to use it to determine race results. I think it would be interesting to determine race winners by using age-graded results. It seems it would level the playing field a bit. I think it would attract a lot of attention/participation.

There's a race like that near San Francisco: The Dispea Race crosses the Marin coastal mountains from Mill Valley and finishes on Stimson Beach. It's been around since the early 1900's, and is the second-oldest footrace in the US after the Boston Marathon. Also like Boston, it is very difficult to get into. www.dipsea.org

I don't think Dipsea uses the exact age-grading formula you see in other race results, but it's something similar. Runners are actually given a head start of up to 10 minutes (I think) in proportion to their age and sex, relative to men in their 20's and 30's who start last. The first person to reach the finish line is the winner.

Because of the unique handicapping system, anyone who would normally be competitive in their age group is a contender to be the overall winner. Past champions have included children under 10, senior citizens, stay at home moms, etc.
