superbowl fodder Posted: Sun Feb 06, 2005 2:11 pm

so on this superbowl sunday, somewhere in the midst of the 37 hours of pregame, i got to thinking. i would love to see some of these 350 pound 'athetes' out on a marathon course. after that i remembered that a former runningback for the forty-niners, roger craig, ran chicago this year in just under 4 hours if memory serves. off the top of my head i couldn't think of any other pro athletes that have tackled the marathon after retirement. While we all know hip-hop stars and day-time talk show hosts make the best marathoners, what non-endurance sport, ex-pro athlete might fare the best in a marathon? I'm thinking soccer, maybe basketball....

I remember reading somewhere that one of the NASCAR drivers ran a respectable marathon not long ago. Maybe Darrel Waltrip or somebody like that, I can't remember.

As a former soccer coach (my daughters' team) I vote soccer. Though you said non-endurance, and in my oppinion soccer could be argued as an endurance sport.

That's true, a soccer field is pretty huge, and the players are pretty much always running. So the question is whether any pro soccer players have ever tried a marathon? I bet someone has, but I'm not sure how we could find out.
