Okay, this is scary. This happened right on one of my common running routes. In fact, I was just there this morning.

I was riding my bike along the Erie Canal towpath one time about 18 years ago when I came across a woman lying on the ground with bloodied knees and elbows. I stopped to help her up and find out what had happened. Apparently seconds earlier a guy had jumped out of the bushes and wrestled her to the ground, but apparently had bolted when he saw me coming around a bend. This was near Rochester's airport, and apparently she was a stewardess out for a jog during a lay over. I walked her back near to her hotel, and although I think she was grateful to have someone walk her back, I could also sense that she didn't entirely trust me and probably wouldn't be trusting anyone else for a while to come.
It's pretty freaky when this kind of violence strikes close to home. Knock on wood, and keep your eyes peeled for the bad guys, I guess.

It turns out I was off by a bit-- this happened on a road I often run, but a couple of miles further down the road from where I normally turn around. I don't think I've ever run to the intersection they mention, but I've been close.
Still it's pretty spooky. I don't usually give it a second thought when I'm out running alone in unfamiliar neighborhoods at odd hours, since I'm usually in "good" areas, and I can't imagine what reason anyone would ever have to mess with me. But I suppose you never can predict what might happen. And I guess it's just an unfortunate fact of life that women runners have to be especially careful about this kind of thing. Running with a friend would probably help, but it stinks that that's necessary in order to feel safe.
