Ankle Discomfort Posted: Mon Feb 28, 2005 10:07 am

For about the past week now I've been noticing some slight tenderness/achiness in my left outer ankle and achilles tendon, where I've never experienced any problems in the past. I first noticed the feeling below the bump of my outside ankle bone, and it seems to have spread to my achilles tendon in the same foot. If it were just the achilles tendon I'd think it might be tendonitis. Initially I thought maybe I'd just twisted my ankle until the achilles tendon started acting up. The two combined, however, have me stumped. It doesn't hurt so much that I alter my stride at all...it's more that I'm conscious that something isn't quite right, and that feeling always makes me paranoid that it's going to get worse.

Anyone had any similar experiences / advice / insights?

Have you purchased new shoes, insoles or otherwise changed the fit of your running shoes recently? How about the shoes you wear when you're not running...have they changed?

If you're not already stretching your lower legs after your runs, I suggest you take extra time to really work one stretching (even deep tissue massage) your leg from the calf muscle down right after each run...and then some in the evening before you go to bed and again in the morning before you start moving around too much.

Take time to nip this in the bud now rather than wait for it to get more serious before you take real action. I wish someone had told me this before my PF flaired up. I've learned the hard way to pay attention to little aches and pains.

Hmmm, maybe I just need some new shoes. I've sort of lost track of how many miles I have on my current shoes, since they're my winter, sloppy weather shoes and don't get worn consistently. Usually dead shoes result in hip pain for me, but maybe this time it's manifesting itself in ankle pain. Regardless, I'll try the extra stretching you suggest. Thanks for the tip!

Worn out shoes was the first thing I thought of too. Do you rotate pairs, or keep running in the same pair until it dies?

Shoe rotation depends upon the weather in the winter. If it's too nasty I run on the treadmill and then do rotate pairs. If it's acceptable outside then I always wear my one pair of waterproof shoes. If it alternates between ok and nasty, and I therefore alternate between indoors and out, I rotate shoes by default. This past week I ran outside all week, so maybe that solves the mystery right there.

I'm having the same issues, strangely enough. Nothing painful, just slightly irritated, like tendonitis. I chalk mine up to running on the left side of the street where it slopes down to the curb, so I've shifted to running towards oncoming traffic on small side streets.

Yesterday during my long run I was definitely trying to stick to flatter road surfaces, and even found a little soft dirt (well, mud actually) to run in for a mile or so along the roadside that wasn't covered with snow. Hard to say whether it helped or not, but I'm sure it didn't hurt! Good luck to both of us!

You must be leaving for Ireland in 3 weeks or less now, right? That'll be exciting!

I doubt it's the same thing, but just in case it helps... I had some heel issues last year. They were really stiff when I got up in the morning and took most of the day to 'warm up'. If I sat at my desk at work then got up to walk around, they'd click and pop... It was never too painful, but it always concerned me. At the time I was switching between two different brands of shoes. The one just didn't fit quite right. I think they slipped a bit on my heel and kind of pulled down on the back of my foot. Not the best description, but I know that there are different lacing techniques or insoles perhaps, to make everything fit right and stay put. Perhaps these shoes just fit a bit differently now that they're older, just enough to cause the discomfort.

No, what you're describing isn't the same, but I've experienced what you describe a couple of times in the past. It always seems to just go away eventually after causing me all sorts of worry. Probably as a result of more focus on stretching the backs of my calves. It would always be worst when I first woke up in the morning. No clicking and popping, though! That sounds scary!
