Kenya Bans Top Runner From Competition |
|
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Mon Feb 28, 2005 10:58 am |
Athletics Kenya has banned one of its best runners from all competition for the remainder of 2005. Susan Chepkemei is a two time silver medalist at the world half-marathon championships, and also a formiddale marathoner, having finished just seconds behind Paula Radcliffe at last fall's New York Marathon. Chepkemei failed to show up for the start of Kenya's national cross country training camp last week. Speculation is that after being denied permission to compete in an overseas race during the weekend, she went AWOL. Chepkemei has not offered any explanation for her absence and her whereabouts are currently unknown.
It's interesting to contrast the conditions of athletes in countries like Kenya and China, where their schedules are tightly controlled, to other nations where the athletes are mostly free to compete as they choose. Chepkemei was scheduled to compete in April's London Marathon, so this will certainly hurt Kenya's performance there. Athletics Kenya apparently felt that their actions were necessary to ensure that athletes comply with their rules and work as a national team rather than as individuals.
