running and the immune system
Posted: Tue Mar 08, 2005 7:03 pm
We've seen some news in the past about how a long, hard run or race can supress the immune system for up to a day afterwards. Well, I'm living proof of that now! Before Sunday's marathon, I was feeling a bit sick with some minor cold symptoms. Post-marathon yesterday and today, I've been completely leveled by this cold! My throat is so sore and swollen, it's practically swollen shut and I can barely talk. Doh!!

RIckshaw, if it's realldy sore you might want to arrange a doctor visit to check for Strep. I've gotten it in the past a couple times during periods of intense workouts when I wasn't eating or resting well. I don't know if I got a cold first and then Strep or if they both came at the same time. One of my three daugthers has come down with it each year for the past four or so years, during soccer or lacrosse season. It's more common that many people think. We've been takig extra care this year to make sure they eat and rest better and so far no Strep.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Congrats on doing the marathon. Pretty nice time for a sickee! I hate saying this, and you probably already know this, but you probably should have skipped the marathon since you had felt so under the weather leading up to it. Running it wiped out any remnants of an immune system you had working for you! :o)
Having said that, I'm not sure how to avoid it. The training will do it to you, so I guess just wash your hands alot and avoid sick people. I hope you get better soon Rickshaw!

Thanks everyone. I'm feeling somewhat better today after switching cold medicines. I don't think I have strep, but if it persists much longer I will go visit the doctor.
It's funny, yesterday afternoon I had a phone interview for a job, and I could barely talk. I was alternating croaking and whispering. The guy I was talking with must have thought I was pretty strange.
Pretender, I did consider not running on Sunday. But at the time, my cold symptoms were pretty minor, and I mostly just felt tired. On race morning I actually felt fine, so I decided to go for it.
