Running Barefoot? |
|
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Thu Jun 30, 2005 10:12 pm |
Runner's World's Amy Burfoot has written an interesting article on the merits of running barefoot. With today's fancy shoes, when if ever does it make sense to go without? Abebe Bikila won the 1960 Olympic marathon running barefoot, then went on to win again in 1964 with shoes. Zola Budd set a 5000 meter world record running shoeless in 1984. For the elites, the weight of even the lightest shoes can be too much. Australian physical therapist Michael Warburton estimates that 100 grams of extra weight on your feet decreases your running economy by one percent, or about a five percent reduction for a pair of typical 10-ounce shoes. The vast majority of runners will still choose to wear shoes for the support and protection they provide, but they may not even be aware of the speed/protection tradeoff they make.
