Gene Doping: The Next Temptation For Athletes
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Tue Oct 11, 2005 9:19 pm
Does the future hold the prospect of exotic illegal doping techniques in professional athletics? Almost certainly, according to a panel of sports medicine experts. Top athletes are always searching for ways to make themselves a little stronger, a little faster. The increasingly frequent scandals involving steroids and other chemical doping agents in sports demonstrate how some athletes are willing to go beyond the rules to gain an extra advantage. Applying techniques originally developed to treat diseases such as Parkinson's, it's now possible for athletes to alter their own DNA in order to boost performance. The practice involves injecting viruses containing a custom genetic payload, which then enter the body's cells and load the athletes with the genes they want. While there's no evidence that anyone has tried gene doping yet, most believe it's only a matter of time, and may become a significant problem by the time of the 2008 or 2012 Olympic Games.
