Tergat Out-Lunges Ramaala At The Tape To Win NY Marathon
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Sun Nov 06, 2005 12:36 pm
World-record holder Paul Tergat won the 2005 New York City Marathon, just barely outlasting defending champion Hendrick Ramaala in a dramatic finish. Ramaala and Tergat ran stride for stride up Park Drive during the final few hundred yards. Coming up to the line, both men lunged, but it was Tergat who broke the tape as Ramaala tumbled to the pavement. Tergat and Ramaala both finished in 2:09:31, while Meb Keflezighi finished in third place with a time of 2:09:57. Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia was the women's champion, with a winning time of 2:24:41.

I watcthed the finish on TV, and it really was amazing. It looked more like a 100 meter finish than a marathon. Tergat and Ramalla were jockeying for position right down to the wire, trading position several times. With maybe 50 yards to go, they were still neck and neck, sprinting all out. It wasn't until the last few yards that Tergat managed to get just a fraction ahead, no more than a foot or two in front. Ramaala stumbled and fell just as they hit the tape, and ended up spread-eagled right on top of the finish line's timing mat. Incredible.

The graphic footage of Susan Chepkemei puking on the run was also pretty memorable...
