Ethiopian Shoots For Half-Marathon Record

Top distance runner Haile Gebrselassie plans an attempt for the half-marathon world record at tomorrow's Rock 'N' Roll Arizona Marathon. With the help of three pace-setters, the 32-year-old Ethiopian will run the final half of the marathon, aiming at the mark of 59:16 set by 18-year-old Kenyan Samuel Wanjiru in Rotterdam last September 11. "If it happens, wonderful. If not, what can I do?," Gebrselassie said prior to the race. "This is not my first competition. It's not my last competition. I will try for it next time. We'll see." If he's successful, it would be the 19th world record for Gebrselassie, who won Olympic gold medals at 10,000 meters in 1996 and 2000 and is a four-time world champion.
