Win $1 Million At Boston With Banned Shoes
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Thu Jan 19, 2006 4:10 pm
An interesting stunt: Spira Footwear is offering a $1,000,000 prize to any runner who can win the 2006 Boston Marathon and get banned wearing a pair of Spira brand shoes. The company says its shoes have been banned from USATF and IAAF competition because its WaveSpring technology provides runners with "additional assistance" prohibited by the rules. "We're attempting to bring attention to an outdated and unfair rule," says Spira's CEO. And sell some shoes at the same time, no doubt. I doubt Tergat or Radcliffe will be signing up, but if you've run a sub-2:30 marathon in the past 12 months (sub-3:00 for women), you could at least score a free pair of shoes off the company.

Spira has recruited three Kenyan runners to wear their shoes at Boston next week. Although it's unlikely anyone of them will be in contention to win and collect the $1 million, they should place highly enough to earn Spira lots more free publicity. The most accomplished of the three, Philip Metto, won the 2004 Mexico City Marathon and has a personal best of 2:15.
