Keflezighi Leads Strong American Contingent At Boston
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Thu Apr 06, 2006 11:49 am
It's been 23 years since an American last won the Boston Marathon. Could this month's 110th running finally break that streak? With Meb Keflezighi and Alan Culpepper competing for team USA, the Americans' chances look better than they have in years. Meb recently sat down with Runner's World Magazine to discuss his life, his training, and his plans for the race.

I just noticed that Culpepper's marathon PR is actually better than Meb's (2:09:41 vs 2:09:53). Okay, it's only a few seconds' difference, so call it even. Yet Meb is considered to be a strong contender to win, whereas Culpepper is expected to do well but is more of a long shot to finish first. I wonder why?

Wow, it was a great Boston Marathon for the American men, and not just for Meb and Culpepper. It's nice to see that the American roster has got some depth to it again. Not that I begrude other countries having great marathon champions, but it's kind of a downer to see the US distance athletes routinely in "also ran" status. Better American results will probably also boost interest here in the the marathon as a competitive sport for top athletes, in addition to a get fit/personal challenge adventure for weekend warriors. Right now, I'd bet practically no one in the US could name a single American marathon pro. Maybe in a few more years' time, that will change.
