Rickshaw does Boston Posted: Thu Apr 20, 2006 6:19 am

Hi everyone! I've got a few minutes now while traveling to give you a quick race update, and I'll put together a more detailed report when I return home on Sunday.

The race was a blast! It was beautiful running weather, and I felt ready to go by noon on Monday. It seemed that the whole city of Boston and the surrounding towns came to a complete stop, as everybody came out to cheer on the runners. It was like a 26 mile standing ovation... incredible.

I was pretty pleased with my race. I planned to run a 3:20 pace (7:38 miles) up until the hills at mile 16, and managed to keep it about there or a little faster. The pace felt very easy. The Newton Hills weren't bad at all, really. I'm not even sure which one was Heartbreak Hill. After the last hill at mile 21, I was holding together fairly well, but just felt really tired, and slowed to a little over 8:00 pace. I finished in 3:22:57. Had I paced everything perfectly and really gutted out the final miles (which I didn't), I probably could have managed a couple of minutes faster, but no more. It's certainly a tough course.

I didn't get to see Bricks, but I heard he finished a few minutes ahead of me. Way to go!

It truly is amazing how the entire community supports and gets excited about the race. It's an amazing atmosphere. I don't know if you called or not, but I actually left my phone charger back home so I had it off most of the weekend, using it only sparingly and didn't even bother to take it to the village. Can't wait to read your race report. Congratulations!
