LA mountain trails
Posted: Sun May 21, 2006 6:38 pm
I was in LA this weekend visiting my wife's family, and got a chance to do some decent trail running. Maybe I stumbled across some of Rustyboy's favorite haunts? I had to get out the door for my run at 5:30am, because we were headed for Disneyland later in the morning. My in-laws live way up in a canyon in west LA, and from their house I was quickly able to find some crazy-steep singletrack up to the canyon's ridge line. It was cool and foggy at dawn, and I saw a couple of coyotes, birds, and countless rabbits. From the ridgeline I climbed further up towards the summit near "dirt Mulholland", where there's an abandoned WWII-era missile base. Fantastic views all around once the fog started to clear off, and I had the whole place to myself. I could get used to this!

YES! You were probably running in/between Will Rogers State Park and Temescal Cyn. These are a couple of my favorite, closeby spots - that range connects to the Santa Monica Mountains Backbone Trail, which can take you waaaay the hell out there.
I ran at Griffith Park Saturday morning (just east of the Hollywood sign), and the conditions were the same: Low cloud cover early on, but by noon, it'd burned off and became a picture-perfect day.
It's really addictive when you have access to that level of trails out your front door, isn't it? How long did you run for?

I was in Mandeville Canyon, which I think isn't far from Will Rogers Park. The trail climbed east out of the canyon, then north to the Nike missile base along dirt Mullholland (?). I followed the road for a while past the base, before doubling back. The whole run was a little over an hour, followed by 10 hours on my feet at Disneyland, so I was pretty beat by the end of the day!
