hot weather race tips? urgent
Posted: Wed Jun 21, 2006 2:22 pm
I'm running a "longest day" 5 mile race later today, in celebration of the summer solstice. The trouble is, it's HOT. Current official temperature at the airport is 95 degrees with full sun, and my backyard thermometer helpfully tells me it's 122. It's also a high ozone day. Fortunately, humidity is pretty low at 22%.
Obviously I'm not going to turn in a great time at this race, but I could use some advice on how to approach it beyond "take it easy". How much slower should I expect to run? Should I intentionally start slower, or just go as hard as I can given the heat? Should I not run at all?

Daaaamn, that's a scorcher, but it *is* "only" 5 miles....if you choose to run it:
A. Hat
B. SPF 30 or higher
C. Hydrate beginning RIGHT NOW if you haven't been already
D. Hydrate like a mutha afterwards and replace your electrolyets
E. Don't expect loved ones to hug you at the race's end.
I don't see why you shouldn't run, but then, living in SoCal, I deal with this from July - October.
Have a good race!

I've always found that hats warm me up, rather than help keep me cool., so I will probably go without. Race time is 8PM, so it'll be getting on towards sunset and the light shouldn't be too intense (I hope).
I'm also pondering whether to go shirtless. I never have, since my chest and back are not really a pretty sight, but maybe today I should make an exception. Or else maybe I'll use a super lightweight singlet.
