Daniels vs Runworks Calculator
Posted: Sun Dec 31, 2006 7:47 am
I am sure this has been posted many times before, but why is there a difference between the RunWorks Calculator and Daniels (2nd edition) easy run calcuation?
For instance, for someone who has a VDOT of 57 is "prescribed" to run 7:41 for Easy Pace while the RunWorks Calculator states 7:25.

Can you tell me the race distance/time you entered into the calculator to get that VDOT? I'll double-check the math.
The calculator is a curve-fit to the data from the VDOT tables in Daniels' first edition. There might be a small discrepancy, but 7:41 vs 7:25 is way off. I wonder if he changed the data between the first and second editions. I didn't think so, but I never looked at it closely.

The time I used was 5:11 for the mile (1609). In Daniel's 2nd Edition here are the values for various intensities:
E - 7:41 per mile, M - 6:31 per mile, T - (400 -91, 1000 - 3:50, Mile - 6:09), I - (400-85, 1000 - 3:31, 1200 - 4:15), R - (200 - 39, 400 - 79)
When I use the Runworks Calculator, I get the same values except for the E Pace. It lists 7:24 for the mile, 4:36 for the 1K, and 1:51 for 400.

Aha! The values that Daniels gives for easy runs are about 3-4% slower in his 2nd edition, as compared to the 1st. I never noticed that before. I don't recall it being mentioned in the text either. The only clue I can see is that the 1st edition refers to it as E/L pace, while the 2nd edition refers to it simply as E pace. I would infer that to mean Daniels believes that "long" pace should be slightly faster than "easy" pace, but maybe he just decided his earlier numbers were too aggressive.
Only the easy pace numbers differ between the editions. The Runworks calculator is based on the 1st edition, so the values for E pace will be a little faster than what you'd see in the 2nd edition. If you prefer the 2nd edition's advice, then add an extra 0:20/mi or so on to the E pace values from the calculator.
