What do you do with your race medals? Posted: Thu Jan 06, 2005 11:09 am

I've got about a dozen of them now, from various marathons and other races. For a while, I used to have them hanging in my cubicle at work, but now they occupy a hook in my closet. It seems a little sad, but I'm not sure what else to do with them. What do other people do?

Can you imagine the trophy clutter of an elite athlete like Marion Jones? She's probably got a crate of race awards sitting in the garage, world champion trophies stocked in piles in her closet, a couple of olympic medals in a bag under the bed. I'll bet that when she needs a coin to unscrew the back of a toy or something, she just grabs a gold medal that happens to be lying around and uses that. :-)

I've got mine (10) hanging off my framed NYC M arathon poster that I had signed by Deena Drosin (Kastor) at the 2001 NYC Marathon Expo. I also have all my race bibs (64) strung together and hanging with my medals too.

I don't think they're looking too tacky yet...but it's getting there. I plan to someday make a a nice big framed collage of all my race bibs, and I think I might do the same with my medals. You can get "shadow boxes" of various sizes at many frame shops. They're designed to display awards and "knick Knacks" (which I'm afraid is all my medals will all amount to some day).

Yeah, I considered putting them in shadow boxes and such, but then I'd have to find a spot for the boxes! I guess I'm just not one to set up a big trophy case in my home, at least not until I've won something that's really worth bragging about. In the meantime, my daughter occasionally enjoys putting the medals on 4 at a time and proudly walking around the house. Of course, on her they hang down to the knees!

One day I hope to have this dilemma. Like rich people complaining about managing their money. :)

Heh... well, it's not that hard. All but one of the medals I have were earned simply by finishing a race, and not for "winning" anything. Virtually every marathon gives a medal to all the finishers, as do many shorter races.

Now don't get me started about race T-shirts...

Yeah, don't get me started about his race T-shirts either, as the one who does his laundry...
... I saw once an ad in some running magazine that you could have your race T-shirts made into a quilt. Talk about tacky! (Okay, sorry to all you race T-shirt quilt owners out there).

Well, in defense of the tacky t-shirt quilt, I've always thought that perhaps someday I'd send off some of my favorite shirts to be made into a quilt that could be used as a throw or "stadium blanket." I certainly wouldn't put it on a bed. I live in a 125 year old Victorian home (once lived in by a young Alfred Kinsey...see the movie with Liam Neeson) and having exta throws available around the den during the winter is a requirement..

Carry one with while running to smack unfriendly dogs and ill intentioned pedestrians ?... One of those medals swung on the end of the neck ribbon should develop a pretty good velocity...

Good idea, they DO weight quite a bit. If you've got a big collection, you could even wear them all at once in order to build neck strength!
