chafed nipples: ouch!
Posted: Sat Jan 08, 2005 1:41 pm
I did a long, cold, wet run this morning that left my nipples raw... ouch! What do you all use to deal with this problem? I've used nip-guards during marathons, but they're too expensive for every day use.
Should I just grit my teeth until my nipples are hard and scarred? That doesn't sound like much fun.

Ahh...I may not be much of a runner but I've got the chaffed nipples thing solved. Of course, the problem is with a wet shirt sliding up and down against your chest as you run. There isn't much you can do to prevent this without going shirtless. So, after much experimenting I've found the right brand of bandaid that stays on even after running a long run drenched in sweat. The CVS Pharmacy brand SHEER SPOTS (UPC: 0504280344217) are the BEST. A box of 110 will put you back about $2-3. I've come to depend on them. Trust me, I've tired all the other brands and types of bandaids including the "waterproof" type. These are the best. I've sometimes forget to take them off until I get home from a run and step into the showe and realize I still have them on. So, they're comfortable. I've never used "Nipguards" before but I can't imagine that they could possibly be any better than the CVS brand.

Try BodyGlide. Comes in a stick like deodorant, but won't stain your clothes. Works like a charm.

I've tried that, but like other jells and creams you have to re-apply it during a long sweaty run. The bandaid approach is a "stick it and forget it" solution; for me anyways.

I always feel a little self-conscious applying BodyGlide. Something with a name like that should only be sold in the "adult" section of the pharmacy!

I've always thought the same thing. I wonder why it didn't cross the mind of their marketing person. Perhaps it did and figured it would sell better as a crossover product. :o)
It reminds me of a friend who was a Catholic seminarian. Their intermural softball team was called "The Master Batters". Jeeso. You would think that this would not have passed the giggle test! What with all of the stereotypes about celebate males and all. But maybe it was intentional, though he disputes that.

And then there's the debate team, the Master Debaters.

Rickshaw, if you're really secure in your manhood, I understand a sports bra does the trick for women if you want to give that a try. Seriously though, I find the tighter my base layer, the less I need to worry about it because the boucing that causes the chafing is reduced. But sometimes on a wet, cold day, you have to break down and use the nipguards for anything over 6-7 miles. I have yet to get any bandaid to work, but I'll have to schedule a trip to CVS and give those a whirl...

No CVS around me, but thanks to the miracle of the internet:

OK, sorry for the delayed reaction, but I have finally had to chance to test these out (kind of). We don't have a CVS near us, and I hated paying shipping by ordering online so it took awhile. My wife went out of town and I knew they had a CVS so I told her exactly what to pickup. Alas, she picked up something that was a little different. Instead of SHEER SPOTS, she picked up CLEAR SPOTS. She said that that was all that they had. Anyway, I took them out for a test run on Saturday. I ran 14 miles with them. They didn't come off at all. They worked great. In fact, they are kind of hard to get off! Plus, since the ones I got were clear, it just looks like a tiny white square in the center of each nipple. :o) Kinda strange. Anyway, a heck of a bargain. Ten times cheaper than nip guards. Thanks so much for the tip!

Great. I'm glad to hear they worked for you too. I was afraid it might turn out to be one of those "your milage may vary" sort of things.

How big are these things? One reason I use nipguards is that they're exactly the size of the aerola (sp?) around the nipple. I have enough chest hair that a larger bandage or nipple guard would just end up sticking to hair instead of skin, and then basically just flop around uselessly.

Well, according to the measurement info on the box they are 7/8 in. x 7/8 in.
