What do you put on your feet when you run? I've seen some pretty fancy and expensive socks advertised in catalogs, such as Thorlos and Asics socks. They're supposed to be super high-tech and just the ticket for runners, but c'mon, they're socks. At $10+ for a single pair, is anybody buying these things? Personally I buy the cheapest Coolmax socks I can find, and they seem fine to me. What's on your feet?

I wear Thorlos every time I run. They are the only socks I've ever been able to run in without developing blisters in the arches of my feet, so to me, they are worth the extra money. Whether they are the technological thing for running is beyond me--I don't get blisters, which is the main thing I care about.

Are the Thorlos made of something special? I thought there were just Coolmax or a similar material, like most other running socks. Or is it the thickness that makes the difference for your feet?

The Thorlos offer extra cusion in the heel and toe area. I've found some of the other brands (i.e. Wigwam,Ironman) are much better at wicking away moisture. I think it was the Wigwam brand I wore duriing the Manhattan Half Marathon last August, on a very warm and humid day. My body and clothes were soaking wet after the race...but when I took off my shoes and socks after the race I found my feet nice and dry. It was amazing. So, I tend to wear the these type of socks on shorter runs/races or when I expect to be sweating heavily. Otherwise, I wear Tholos on longer runs to provide extra cushioning.

Well, I feel a little like I'm cheating, but I wear comparatively cheap ankle-cotton socks on 90% of my runs. I never have any blister problems, I guess maybe my feet get a little sweaty in the summer but it really doesn't bother me, and I buy them for something like $12 for a pack of 6. I find that I wear holes through the tops of the toes of my expensive socks just a fast as I do with my cheap cotton socks, so why shell out $10+ per pair?! On 20-mile plus runs I'll usually make sure I'm wearing coolmax ones, but beyond that it's pretty much whatever's clean.

I think the advantage vs. cotton isn't supposed to be extra longevity for your socks, but better protection against blisters. But if your feet are happy and blister-free in cotton they I don't see any reason to change. After all, people have been running much longer than Coolmax has been around, right?

Before the last Half Marathon I ran (back in October) I noticed a guy that appeared not to be wearing any socks. I though that was kind of odd and wondered what his feet and inside of his shoes were going to be like as he was finishing the race. Around the 9 mile point I slowly came up behind a guy who's shoes were squeeking loudly because his feet were so wet they were rubbing each time he planted his foot. As I passed him I recognized him as the guy I saw before the race. By the look on his face he looked fine and his stride didn't exhibit any problems. I don't know how he managed to run without socks...the constant squeeking alone would be enough to get on my nerves.

I usually wear wright socks ($8 at EMS), 2 thin layers wick sweat well and no blisters. I also have a pair of aerators by De Feet. I think they're cycling socks but I couldn't resist the Godzilla on the ankle.

I'm a Defeet man all the way. I like the low-cut ones, personally, both the speede and the cush lines (thicker for the winter).

I'm with you. I like fancy socks, but they seem way to $$$. I do own one pair of Thorlos, but I opted for their thin version so it really isn't any different from the cheapest moisture wicking pairs I can buy.
The mistake I made when I started was buying those low cut socks where your ankle bone (I'm sure that the correct medical term!) sticks out. If I had it to do over, I would buy the kind that covers the ankle bone. For some reason, probably just plain dorkiness, I sometimes (once a week maybe) kick my right inside ankle bone with my left foot. It has, in the past, sheared off a chunk of flesh and then I have blood on my sock and shoe. Plus if I'm unlucky, I kick it again before it heals and here we go again. I bought a stupid tennis wrist band that I put around my right ankle when I run now. That's my solution until I have to buy new socks anyway. :o)

I love the wigwam ultimax triathlete ultra-low socks. The thorlos have too much cushioning/padding for me. The ultimax ones are just thin coolmax, and I find they keep my feet much more blister-free then cotton socks (cotton ones tend to bunch, or lose their elasticity and slide down into my shoes). I think good socks last longer than the cheap ones so i don't mind spending $5/pair.

The correct term is malleolus, the inner(medial) one is part of the tibia and the outer (lateral) is part of the fibula.
Any blood stains on socks, shoes or any other clothing is valid justification for bragging.

Oooh! About a year ago I went for a 20 mile run, the first in a while, and noticed part-way through that my foot felt "slippery" inside the shoe. I thought it was sweat. Of course after the run I found that one of my toenails had dug into a neighboring toe, and the sock was completely soaked with blood. Gross.

You know, I actually prefer the really low cut socks. At first I thought they looked silly, but now if I've got anything extending above my shoe, my ankles feel hot!

I just love Thorlos! I buy them dirt cheap as imperfects (I still have not found what make them imperfects) at Marshall's. I also sprinkle fot powder (talcum) for the long runs and it works perfect!

Yeah, since I posted this thread originally, I've become a much bigger fan of Thorlos myself. The extra cushioning does seem to make a difference, and they last longer than my other socks. I just wish they weren't so expensive.
