treadmill at home Posted: Mon Jan 17, 2005 1:56 pm

Anybody have a home treadmill? Is it worthwhile? There are a few occasions when it would be great to get in a run without having to leave the house, but I don't think they're common enough to warrant spending thousands on a treadmill. Plus you've got to figure out where to put the thing. If you've got a treadmill at home, are you happy with it?

I have a treadmill at home, but to tell you the truth, I hardly ever use it. I much prefer to be outside during good weather. I probably would use it more if I just made up my mind to do so. I did use it a couple of days a few weeks ago when we had a lot of snow and ice outside. The one that I have isn't one of the expensive ones. It's a ProForm that we bought from Sears for about $500 about four years ago. Actually, it works quite well. It probably makes a little more noise than the expensive ones but I've had no problem with it. It has a 2 1/2 horsepower motor, an incline up to 10 degrees, and a top speed of 10 mph, much faster than I could ever move. Perhaps if I used it day in and day out, it would wear out sooner than a more expensive model.

I have a couple of friends who have treadmills and they thoroughly enjoy them, especially for doing interval work.

I have a treadmill, along with an exercise bike and a multi-function weight machine. The treadmill is a Pro-Form and is at least 10 years old. I don't remember what I paid but I'm sure it was around $500. Last year I replaced the tread and now it works good as new. I only use it in inclement weather or when there is snow or ice on the ground but it is great having the convenience. Although I don't use that often, considering how long I've had it, it was a great investment.

That's interesting-- you're both happy with inexpensive ($500) treadmills, whereas everything I've read says that you need to spend $2000 minimum to get a treadmill suitable for running. I don't remember exactly what the problems were supposed to be with the cheaper ones, I think they were either too narrow/short, not stable enough, not fast enough, too failure-prone, or some combination.

There are shorter units but mine is plenty long and wide. While its not industrial strength, basically I'm the only one who uses it and I don't use it that often. With the little amount of use, it has lasted much longer than I expected. At this point it has cost around $50/yr to have the convenience of running in my home gym on days like today when the wind chill temperature is below 0.

As far as speed mine goes up to 10 mph which is a 6:00 mile. That is much faster than I run so speed is not an issue.

Stability is also not an issue. I weigh 152 and find the treadmill is quite sturdy.
