Stupid question: are marathons in Canada marked in miles or kilometers?

Somehow 42 kilometers sounds a lot worse than 26 miles.

Anybody? Has no one run a Canadian marathon?

From the Toronto Marathon page:

Course
The 1st mile, every 5th mile, and each km are marked. Split times will be called at 1 mile, 5k and every 5k thereafter.

Not sure about the rest..

Every fifth mile AND every kilometer? That must be really confusing. For instance, the 8K and 5 mile splits would be nearly on top of one another. God bless the metric system!

Hi, I run in Switzerland where everthing is metric. Just in case your curious, they say they hit 'the wall' at 30 km over here. Marthon is 42.2; we have halves and quarter marathons, the latter being just over a 10 k.

Greetings from the Great White North, where we've gone metric. I've run 8 marathons and a bunch of other races up here and they're vitually all marked only in kilometres. Some may have the first mile, or 5 mile marker shown, and the odd one such as Niagara, which starts in the US and ends in Canada, has both miles and kms.

I can actually see some small advantage to km markers instead of miles. You'll get more frequent feedback on your pace, so you'll if you drift too fast or too slow, you'll find out about it sooner.

Good point. I think I like that idea. But it would mean getting use do tracking my pace in km during my training runs...and none of my running routes are measured in km. Dagnabit.

Unless you're used to it, it's got to be depressing to get to the half and only have 21k to go. At least in miles, it's only 13 more miles. I know the distance is the same but having more kilometers to go than miles could have a negative effect.
