Bored on the treadmill Posted: Thu Feb 03, 2005 1:57 pm

I'm not much of a morning person, so I've taken to running on the treadmill at work during lunch or at night when I'm done. However, pretty much anything more than 3 miles is dreadfully boring. How do people deal with this? I have a hard time reading when I'm running there, and TV is only so entertaining. Do people listen to music? I was thinking about getting an iPod shuffle and just listening to that, but what other options are there?

The best option is to not run on the treadmill!

Seriously, if the weather is nice, why not do your lunch runs outside instead of on the treadmill? It's so much nicer to actually go somewhere, see the world, and smell the air. You can run after dark too if you've got a reflective jacket or headlamp, although it's not ideal.

If you must run on the treadmill, I think finding someone you can chat with helps a lot. Convince a friend to go to the gym with you, and take the treadmill next to yours. I've never had much success watching TV while on the treadmill, I always end up straying to one side or the other and stepping off the belt!

Yah, I think running on the treadmill sucks and ihave no idea how other people do it either. I find running outside much more enjoyable and would encourage you to give it a shot. It seems easier to acquire a sense of accomplishment when you are able to witness the ground you cover and the scenery you pass by. I've run a lot at night and it can be done especially once you get to know your route a bit more. Like Rickshaw suggested, wear reflective gear and light colored clothing and just be vigilant of traffic and dog poop on the sidewalk.

I agree with everyone else about preferring to run outside vs on a treadmill anytime. However, when I am forced to run on a treadmill I'll vary the pace and incline pretty often to keep it as interesting as possible. Lots of models have a "mystery" setting where you can input the time, max speed, and max incline you want to run, and they'll keep things shifting around throughout your run. Sometimes that can be mildly amusing.

Okay, I'm weird I know, but I actually enjoy the treadmill more. I can control the environment. I can make it 65 or 75 degrees if I want to. I can control the entertainment. I love to watch movies while running, especially a good action flick which will get your adrenaline flowing. Or I can pump up the stereo and jam to some great music. Also, the treadmill's surface is SO much softer than the road. Ahhhh.... :)

I must be a klutz, because I just can't stay centered on the belt if my attention is anywhere else. 15 seconds watching a TV, and I fall off the treadmill and cause an accident. :-)
