USA Cross Country Championships This Weekend
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Fri Feb 11, 2005 1:40 pm
The nation's best cross-country runners will meet this weekend near Portland to compete in the USA Cross Country Championships. More than 600 athletes will compete in the 4K short course or 12K long course events (or both) during the two-day contest, including some of running's biggest names. The top finishers will earn bragging rights at home, as well as spots on the US team for the 2005 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

The men's entrants include many with impressive resumes: Charlie Gruber (last year's short course winner and a 1500m Olympian), Alan Webb, Adam Goucher, Jorge Torres, and Dathan Ritzenhein. The women's field includes defending champions Shalane Flanagan and Colleen De Reuck, Shayne Culpepper, and Jen Rhines.

This is kind of a tangential comment, but is anyone else out there a big fan of "Running with the Buffaloes"? Whenever I hear mention of one of the characters in that book with relation to a running event it always throws me for a loop, because I half think of them as fictional characters. Yet here's a reference to Adam Goucher, and I think Mark Wetmore was race director for the Visa championship indoor meet two weekends ago, and Steve Slattery was one of the runners competing at that event. Kind of cool...

Yup. Jorge Torres is also mentioned in the book-- he's one of the high school runners they were trying to recruit (which they ultimately did). And two years ago, I saw Adam Batliner at a race at Stanford. He's one of the main guys in the book.
