training tales, Feb 7-13 Posted: Sun Feb 13, 2005 2:14 pm

Ugh, I am so tired. Luckily today's long run was my last. Here's how my week turned out:

M
T 7 (Billat 30-30s)
W 6.5 easy
T 11 medium-long
F 6.5 easy
S
S 21 long
Total: 52 miles

With three weeks to go until my marathon, that marks the end of my regular training and the beginning of my taper. Unfortunately the first week of the taper isn't much different from a normal week.

Anyone else... how did your week go?

M 10
T 4
W 0
T 8 tempo
F 0
S 4
S 15

Total 41

Today's 15-miler was very strange. I felt fine through 11.5 miles, and then just fell apart. My legs got heavy, breathing got harder. I ran the final 3 miles at 1 - 2 minutes slower than target pace, and felt like I was in the last few miles of a marathon. And I felt fine after 15 two weeks ago. Maybe it's residual fatigue from my bad cold last week, or maybe I just hadn't eaten enough before the run. I won't let it get me down, but it sure wasn't pleasant.

How are you liking those Billat 30's, Rickshaw? After doing several workouts using this approach, would you recommend it? How'd your pace hold up during today's 21-miler?

I like the Billat 30-30s, and I've been doing them instead of the interval workouts for my training plan. I can't say that if they're more or less effective, but I feel like they do a better job of pushing me to a sustained hard effort. After a while, each work intervals seems incredibly hard and I can't imagine doing another, but then after the rest interval I feel well enough to do one more...

My 21 miler was okay... I averaged about 8:20, which is a little slower than normal for my long runs.

I wouldn't worry about feeling pooped during your 15 mile run. After all, you went from 8 miles last wek to 41 this week!

M 4 tempo
T 3
W 4 tempo
T 0
F 6 Pace
S 16
S 3
Tot 36

After week 2 of this style of training, I'm becoming more and more of a fan. I can't get over how each day i seem exactly ready for what the schedule has in store for me. no more, no less. I have enough gas for the quicker runs and am just fatigued enough to keep me honest with my pace for the long run. And once again, I'm becoming a huge proponent of the recovery run following a long run.

Nice week, Bricks. You're training for a race in May, right?

What did you mean by "after two weeks of this style of training?" Did your last training program not use an easy day/hard day approach?

The OKC Marathon isn't until late April, so I'm still ramping up. Last week:

M - 4
T - 7
W - 4
Th - 7
Fr - 3
Sat - 14

This week is identical except saturday's run goes up a mile to 15. I'm doing it,but I'm still so stinkin' slow. Oh well.

Yeah, May 30th (Lakeshore). Pretty much the only training I had ever done until a few weeks ago was very basic. A typical week would only have 4 runs. It might have looked like this:

M 4
T 8
W 0
T 4
F 0
S 16
S 0

What I found was that I was almost too rested for my long runs so I found myself running those probably too hard, though since I was rested could handle it. However I spent most of the weekday runs more fatigued, despite the shorter distance. Typically all my runs were about the same pace and my Tuesday run was always the hardest to get through. As a relative beginner having the extra gas and confidence for the longrun helped me mentally. Now that I have a much more solid base and experience, I don't have that fear that I won't be able to complete the distance, so running them not 100% rested is fine...

I did my first interval workout last night (4X800's) and it was very different. I liked it. It looks like those are scheduled on that third week when the weekly mileage steps back before you build up again, adding one repeat each time, building up to 8. It's a totally different kind of workout for me. I'm not used to sucking wind. I'm anxious to see it's effect.
