ibuprofen and running? Posted: Thu Feb 10, 2005 9:10 pm

Anyone know about possible hazards of taking ibuprofen during races? I'd always thought that it was a bad idea, because masking the body's pain signals might cause you to push too hard and make a minory injury into something more serious. But in this month's Trail Runner, they mentioned something about ibuprofen interfering with proper kidney function when runners are dehydrated, possibly leading to kidney failure. Anybody else ever heard this reasoning before?

There are links between ibuprofen (and other similar drugs, called N-something) and hyponatremia (too much water, not enough salt/electrolytes, very bad)

I've also heard the kidney thing, that taking ibuprofen while dehydrated can cause kidney failure (you'll see blood in your urine) but don't know the details of that one.

Just to be safe, I wait until after the run to take my ibuprofen. On balance, I will take it's risks any day over Tylenol. It has a very low toxicity level, particularly when mixed with alchohol. If you get drunk and pop too many, you die. Just another reason to stay away from Tylenol and the "demon rum". :o)

On the other hand, ibuprofen can blind your children. Good heavens! What an awful thing to happen. I'm sure the risk is low, but still. Pretty horrific thing to happen: <http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6986891/>

the safest for your long-term health is clearly not to take any pain relief or anti-inflammatory drugs, right? still, sometimes it's hard to resist :)

Especially when your knees are killing you the day after your 15 mile outing! At least for me anyway. I'm 40 and laid off running for too many years! So, bring on the Motrin!

IMHO:
When drinking, use asprin!
When running don't use pain relievers. A normal dose doesn't really changes things during a run (running provides natural pain relievers, which is one of the reasons it is so easy to get overtraining injuries) and if you need a super dose to run, you shouldn't be running. Take the anti-inflamatories after and ice at the same time.
Random issues:
I read that the alcohol warning on asprin was based on good science that Tylenol and alchol could cause liver failure, but there was no evidence for asprin, but industry pressure forced the FDA to require the warning on all OTC pain relivers so Tylenol wouldn't be harmed commerically. Anyone know more? (I just love conspiracy theories!).
