Running and digital photography... Posted: Mon Feb 28, 2005 3:12 pm

I have been thinking about taking my camera with me on my Saturday long runs. It's dark when I run M-F, plus the routes aren't as interesting. I have seen some cool stuff (bald eagles, bison, etc). It would be nice to have a record of that. I haven't heard it discussed, but do any of you folks ever carry a camera? What kind of camera do you use? Mine is an HP R707. It's tiny and 5 megapixels. It would be perfect. What have been your favorite shots? Just curious...

Interesting, that's something I'd never thought of. I think when I'm out running, I want to focus on the workout, and wouldn't want to stop to take photos. But on the other hand if you view it as more of a power-hike, it makes a lot of sense.

I think the best photo would be one of yourself running in a beautiful location. Maybe ask a passerby to photograph you while you climb up a hill or something...

I did this once back when I first started running on the carriage trails in Maine's Acadia National Park during my summer vacations. I left the camera in my car, did a 12 mile run, then got my camera out and jogged back about a mile to a spot where the trail had an open view of a large pond and mountain in the background. I found a large boulder along side the trail where I could set my camera down (no tripod). I framed the trail, pond, and mountain in the view finder, set the timer for 10 seconds and then ran along the trail to get a picture of me on the trail with the pond and mountain in the background. Since it was a digital camera I could see on the view finder immediately whether I got myself in the frame or not. I repeated this probably about a dozen times before I got a picture I was happy with.

I was running early in the morning before too many other people were out on the trail, so I was able to do all this without risk of looking silly or anyone else getting in my way.

If you're thinking of doing this be sure to plan how you'll setup your camera. You probably won't bring a tripod, so know whether ot not there will be something to set your camera on, or fashion a way to hang your camera from a tree branch.
