Shamrock Shuffle 8K Race Report
Posted: Sun Apr 03, 2005 12:48 pm
Despite suffering from some Over-Training Syndrome the last couple of weeks and a bad muscle pull in my hamstring I ran a confidence building race this morning.
The plan was to start out slow to warm up my hamstring and prevent it from getting worse then ease into a pace i could maintain comfortably for the race. Other than the pain in my leg though, I felt like Running for the first time in a while, and despite training beating me up lately, it apears to be working:
Mile 1: 6:26 (Umm, what happened to starting out slow)
Mile 2: 6:38 (A little more like it, but take it easy)
Mile 3: 6:43 (That's more like it)
5K split 20:30 (Uhh, that's a PR, granted I do very few 5K's, but in the middle of a longer race....)
Mile 4: 6:41 (26:21 another PR)
8K Finish: 33:05 (3rd PR of the day)
While I ran faster than planned, I did have plenty of gas in the aerobic tank and my hamstring is a bit tender to say the least, but I'll take it for sure and it felt good to feel good again after a run.
It was good enough for 530th overall out of 18729 finishers.
Other notes:
-Last year in the same race i posted a 42:18... so this year was a mild improvement.
-Deena Kastor won the women's race with a new American Record missing the World Record by like 8 seconds.

Wow, Bricks, 530 out of that many finishers. That put you in the top 3 percent. And almost 19,000 finishers. That's a real mass of humanity. How do you ever manage to get to the front of a pack like that? Must be a lot of runners back in Chicago. Anyway, way to go. You deserve a pat on the back.

Wow, that's fantastic! Way to go! Your training really seems to be paying off: you're getting faster at an impressive rate. 9 minutes chopped off your race time from the year before... I'd say "mild improvement" is being a little modest. :-)
Are you getting excited about your marathon chances?

Thanks guys,
Yeah, it's a huge race... largest 8k in the world, they boast. I did get a perferred start this year, but i still had to do a decent amount of bobbing and weaving, especially at the strart....
Yeah, i was being sarcastic, last year when i ran it, it was only the second time i'd covered that distance since highschool, there's been a lot of miles run since then so a big improvement was a given.
i did pay the price though yesterday. i had the day off work (opening day) and was excited about a morning recovery run after sleeping in, but i woke up and my hamstring was mush. i set out for the run, slogging along, but it felt like razor blades. i shut it down after less than a mile.
i'm going to jog a few miles after work. it's still tender, but it feels a little better today and hope it will be okay.
i am excited about the upcoming marathon, but i think a 3:10 is a bit too much to ask by the end of May, epsecially if this injury slows me down for much longer. i'd love to get a 3:15 and qualify for a competitive start position for Chicago in October, but will be happy with anything in the 3:20-3:25 range, still targetting Chicago to BQ. I know i'm faster right now, but i have trouble predicting where i'll be down the road as this is still all relatively new to me...

Don't count yourself out of a 3:10 yet. Sure, nothing is guaranteed, but I think you'll have a decent shot by the end of May, especially with several more weeks of training and a good taper before your goal race. Assuming you've done enough long-distance prep, your recent race times point to a marathon time around 3:10 to 3:15.
