Rustyboy's woes continue... Posted: Sat Apr 16, 2005 12:49 am

As you may or may not have read, about 6 weeks ago, I was admitted to hospital with excessively high blood pressure (196 over 110 or something)that may or may not have triggered a mini stroke. As I'm 34, a fairly healthy eater that runs 100+ miles per month, this was a staggering shock, not only to me, but to every doctor that I've met with.

Flash forward to yesterday - my wife and I, having to have cancelled our half mary in Ireland because of expenses due to our sick cat, decided to escape to Hawaii for relaxation and the consumption of about 598 Mai Tais. Lo and behold, yesterday afternoon, after 15 miles of amazing runs in Oahu, I went snorkeling only to cut a huge gash just above my left heel on some coral, which if you haven't been fortunate enough to experience, is only slightly worse than a shard of glass piercing your flesh. I spent 5 hours in the ER, did not need stiches, thankfully, and returned home to LA just hours ago.

I'm not to run until mid-next week and will do some cross-training over the weekend on elipticals and stairmasters, but I thought I'd pop in and whine a little bite more, as I've been wont to do this entire year.

Whatta life we lead as runners, ehn? All I could think about when I hit that coral was, "When will I be able to run again?"

OUCH...Jesus Rustyboy. Did you break a mirror recently or is your sick cat black with a propensity to walk across your path on a regualar basis? Silver lining....let's see...this is a tough one.............. At least it's not a running related injury. Sorry, best I can do. Take it easy and keep close tabs on where your shoes might rub on that thing.

Wow, that stinks. I was about to make the same joke about the black cat. That really stinks. Did the doctors give you any indication of how long you'd need to take it easy before you could get back to running?

Like Bricks said, at least it wasn't a running injury. Try to keep your aerobic conditioning up as much as you can through cross-training, so you can get back to it as soon as your heel lets you.

'Tis true, it could have been faaaaar worse had it been a running related injury. The doc said to not exercise for a week (to avoid bacteria from my shoes creeping in to the healing wound), so naturally, I headed to the eliptical at my gym today and did 5 miles, carefully cleansing my slice when I returned home.

What hurts most is the bruise on my heel, not the cut itself (everything is healing just dandy). I plan on another eliptical tomorrow, a Monday rest day, and then try the roads on Tuesday afternoon. All in all, it's turned out pretty decently considering what happened. Had I hit the wrong kind of coral in the wrong spot, I could have been looking at a sliced tendon, which makes me sick just thinking about.

My cat? Grey and white, so the black cat theory goes out the window. However, there was that voodoo doll I comissioned to have made in my likeness...

Thanks for allowing me to whine - yet again.

Dude that stinks! I only started running in July '04 because my blood pressure was really high like that. Now with diet and excercise I don't even have to take meds. Still borderline though. Keep running! You prolly will have to be on meds for the rest of your life though. Be glad your condition was diagnosed. It's not for nothing that it's called the silent killer.

Here's my present fear: that I won't be able to run the OKC marathon this Sunday the 24th. I'm feeling fine, but my 6 year old son has had a fever for the last 4 days. I'm just hoping and praying that I don't get sick! I'm washing my hands alot and that sort of thing. If I get sick and run a fever for a few days this week, I'll not run it. That would be a major bummer for me since this is my first and I have trained very hard. On the plus side, I seem to have a very strong immune system. If I had your luck, I guess it would be a certainty that I get sick this week! :)

I hope things turn around for you bro. Look at the bright side: some of us would risk slicing our foot open just to be able to swim around a coral reef. I'm in landlocked Oklahoma. I can scuba dive in some muddy water and look at the big catfish, but somehow that is probably a much different experience. :o)

I appreciate your sympathy - man, I hope that you don't get sick. It sounds like you mentally have it beat and are taking the proper precautions, so keep up the positive attitude and continue the scrubbing of your hands.

With the cut pretty much healed on the surface (there's still a nasty bruise below, but, meh, so what), my foot is fine and I plan on a short 5 miler tomorrow to test it out. You're absolutely right: It was worth swimming in the untained Pacific. I could've cut my ankle on a shard of glass from a Coke bottle in my back yard, so I came out ahead in that aspect.

Good luck on your marathon!

On day six of my sons fever, we brought him in to the doctor. He had a wicked double ear infection! He never said anything about his ears. I feel bad for not bringing him in earlier. On the positive side, it's obviously not contagious!

I have been tracking my blood pressure and it's been too high. Getting off the meds some months ago isn't working out. He gave me some Benicar and told me to start taking it daily. I told him that I would like to wait until Monday since I'm running OKC on Sunday. I am a bit worried about how this drug may effect my performance in the short time while my body adjusts to it. He told me that he wouldn't recommend running the marathon without taking the medicine. I gave up. He's the expert I guess. Finishing the race won't matter much if I have a stroke. :o) Anyway, I hope my body adjusts to it OK. But hey! If I suck and have to shuffle for 26.2 and get beat by walkers, at least I have an excuse. "Yeah, I was hoping to qualify for Boston today, but those damn meds threw me off." Yeah, that's the ticket. :o)

Oh man, I hope he's doing better. Ear infections suuuuuck. I had one a few years back and was miserable for a few days.

Since Benicar is an ACE inhibitor, you shouldn't have the side effects that a BETA blocker would give ya: Nausea, exhaustion, the general blahs. I'm on lisinopril, also an ACE inhibitor, and the only side effect I've experienced are a mild headache when I first began taking it and a lowerred resting heart rate.

Isn't it bizarre, having high BP and being a (generally) healthy person? My docs are stumped.

I'm with you guys on that. I just went to my doctor a few weeks ago about it. It's borderline high, not high enough to need to take medication for, but still kind of bewildering given my overall healthy practices.

Maybe we should form a club.

Now there's an idea: A hypertensive runner's club: We run as long and as hard as we can, and the last one left alive, wins!

Hmm. On the other hand...
