core strength exercises Posted: Fri Jul 01, 2005 8:56 am

Can anybody recommend some good, simple exercises for improving core strength? I've seen various exercises described online and in magazines, and tried many of them, but I never really suck with the exercise routine.

This week I decided to make more of an effort to focus on strength building, by doing the simplest possible exercises, so that I might actually stick with it. So every other day I'm doing squats, toe lifts, push-ups, and sit-ups.

My abs are so wimpy, it's sad. I was a bit horrified to discover that I can't do even one real sit-up. Lying on the floor, knees bent, hands behind my head, I cannot actually bring my body up to a sitting position. The best I can do is raise my head and back part-way up, grunt a little, and then collapse laughing. I have a long way to go!

I think that what goes around comes around. The buzz word now is "core strength". Everybody uses it, but I'm not sure exactly what it means. As far as useful power, what helped me alot in wrestling and jiu-jitsu was Matt Furey's stuff. http://www.combatconditioning.com/combatconditioningbook.html

Yes, he's got alot of crap to sell, but his basic combat conditioning book is hard to beat. This guy is freaky strong and doesn't lift weights. It will help your abs, your legs and trunk. That sounds pretty core! That's where your power lies. I'm out shape now as I'm only a runner. :o) I need to start again, but it's not exactly fun to do. But the results are impressive. Just my $.02

Thanks, I'll check out that link! I think in the running world, "core strength" mostly means your abs and other trunk muscles. I haven't read up on it too much, but I think the primary benefit of strong core muscles is that they help you maintain a more erect and effecient posture while running.
