Weight training Posted: Sat Apr 08, 2006 1:46 pm

Well, I've decided, at least for the time being, to continue with some weight training, albeit not anywhere near a body-builder's program. I worked out today and did about two sets for each body part but doing the exercises in more of a circuit fashion, i.e., dumbbell bench press, leg extension, dumbbell row, etc., and found that it only took about 20 minutes. So my plan is to just do this about two times a week. I've used weights for lots of years, so I have a lot of experience with all of the exercises. I can't say that it's ever made me a better runner or mountain biker, but I just feel better psychologically when I'm including weight training in my fitness routine.

Unfortunately, I don't have the hormones or the genetics to lift heavy weights or put on a lot of muscle, but, as I say, I've always pretty much enjoyed lifting weights (more so in the past than now), so for the present I'll keep at it. I appreciate the input that you all have given me. It's always great to get input from others whenever you have a question about something.

20 minutes, twice a week, definitely sounds like a manageable weight routine to me. Do you have weights at home, or do you work out at a gym? I don't have any convenient access to weights right now, but I'm interested in runner-centric strength exercises that can be done without weights, like sit-ups or squats. Know of a good source of info on those kinds of exercises? I've also often heard that short hill-climbing repeats are good for building leg strength, although I've never included them in my training.
