20:00 5k?
Posted: Fri Jun 02, 2006 5:14 pm
If I recall, there were several people here shooting for a 20:00 5k this season. How's it going? I feel like I might be getting close. The calculators say my last 10k time predicts a 20:08 5k time. I'll be doing a road 5k next weekend, and 5k on the track July 15, so I'll have at least two chances to crack into the teens.

I had a great 10K workout last week. After a easy mile warm-up covered the last 5.2 miles with a 7:10 pace and it felt comfortably hard. I've run this pace in a workout before but I've never felt that good throughout the entire run. I'm not ready yet to go below 20:00 for 5K just yet but I feel good that I'm heading in the right direction. The 5K race that I hope to PR is always the same local 5K race held in October. So I have plenty of time to get there. I just know that at this time last year I was no where near running as well as I am now and I managed a 5K PR of 20:06. Plus, this is a 5K course that has as sizable hill 1.5 miles into the race.

Nice job mfox. It sounds like you're well on track for that 20:00 time. Will you be running any other 5K's before that one in October?
I'm slowly ratcheting up the running volume in the hopes that that will help. I did 58 miles this week. I checked back through my old logs, and that's the highest weekly mileage I've done since the week of September 13, 2004! But I'm feeling pretty tired. In fact, I feel like I was beat up by a baseball bat weilding gang. Only six more days until my next 5k race and 20:00 attempt, so I'll probably take it a little easier this week.

You are SOOO gonna ace 20 mns. You have to: No way can a snail like me break 20 before you!
My buddy, Eric, who I ran the LA marathon with in March, and has only been really running since January? He just ran a 20:50 5k.
The man was built by God for running.

I hope you're right! Tomorrow morning I'll give 20:00 my best shot at a nearby 5K. I don't know anything about the course, but it's in a flat part of town, and there should be about 500 runners, so hopefully it'll be fast with lots of strong competition. I think the mental aspect will definitely make the difference between success and failure. If everything goes perfectly, I think 20:00 is just barely within reach, but only if I can dig extra deep and really push myself to the limit. Based on some other recent races, it's also possible I could blow it completely and finish in 21:00+. I'll find out soon!
A side note: 20:00 5K is 6:26/mile pace. 6:26 happens to also be my 1-mile PR! Granted, that was a split from another race, and I've never done a 1-mile race, but it's still pretty daunting.

If your one mile PR of 6:26 was in another race than I'll bet your best mile time is closer to (and probably below) 6:00.
The only time I ran a 1 mile race (5th Ave. mile in NYC, Sept. 2001) I ran 5:58 and I my best 5K time a month later was 20:30 (6:36 pace) when I was at the peak of condition just a week before the 2001 NYC Marathon.
I have no doubt you have a sub 20min 5K in you. Good luck.
