Quiet 'round these parts!
How's everyone's heat training going? Luckily it cooled off in Southern California, but today is supposed to hit 92 again, so I've been on the trails and roads early as of late.
I'm prepping for 2 races: The Bulldog 25k mountain race on the 26th (ran it last year in 3:08. Shooting for >3 this go 'round now that I know the [insanely hilly] course) and the Malibu triathlon Sept 17th - one day before my 36th birthday! Then I leap right into my training for my 50 miler in January. Yeesh. Busy boy.
What races are everyone running?

My running has been pretty pathetic these past few weeks. Between the heat and starting a new job, I've found it very difficult to get many runs in. Somehow running has dropped way down on my list of priorities. I've only been averaging in the 30's per week. I did manage to slog through a 20 miler last Sunday, though, so I'm not a total loss yet. I just got a gym membership next door to my office, so now I'll be able to get some runs in during luchtime.
I'm still planning to run the Wineglass Marathon with OldManRunner on October 1. However, my goals have gone from BQ to simply finishing in one piece.
How have you been tolerating the heat in Southern California? Is it manageable as long as you run at the right time of day?
Good luck in your upcoming races. You're becoming a trail running expert! Let us know how they go!

Congratulations on the new job! The heat is a real pain, isn't it? I'm sure with the assistance of a treadmill so closeby you'll be back up to the mileage you'd like to be running in no time. I love it: "only been averaging in the 30s per week". You're maintaining quite a strong base even though you haven't had time to run!
I've been training early, around 7am, to beat the heat, and for my long run, I head to trails by the ocean where temps are easily 10 degrees cooler than my place in the Valley. A couple of those long runs have been cut short due to the blazing temperatures and intensity of the sun, but for the most part, I've braved the worst of the heat....for now.
Next weekend I'm heading to Lodi, CA to hang with an old high school friend who works as a distributor for a winery there: All expenses paid weekend during a festival at the winery! I'm looking forward to my Saturday long run in a new environment.

I guess the 30s is decent mileage, but nowhere near where I'd hoped to be with a marathon 8 weeks away. And screw treadmills! I'll be running outdoors during lunch. I only wanted the gym membership so I could shower afterwards.
I'm glad to hear you're beating the heat. Those ocean breezes can really help, although it can be a pain if you have to travel to do all of your runs. Your upcoming trip to Lodi sounds great... have fun!

Hello everybody. Long time no write.
Sorry I haven't checked-in for a long time but my running suffered this past summer and I didn't have much to chat or brag about. I've found it interesting that a few of you have complained about lackluster training this past summer too. I'm glad to see I had company.
Well, just as my training was really picking up at the end of May I got a nagging injury to the ball of my right foot. It was something that came and went a little when I was recovering from my Plantar Fasciitus problem. I pretty much got over the PF problem but then the ball of my foot (same foot) became more and more sore. So it caused me to have to backoff of my running quite a bit. I ran 2-3 days a week, and sometimes only once a week, throughout most of June, July and some of August. But I managed to minimize the fitness decline with a decent amount of swimming and biking (triathlon training). I'm probably a good 30 seconds off of my normal racing pace for this time of year. I don't expect any PRs this season and hope to just keep my times respectable.
Despite the foot problem, I managed to do several decent triathlons. I managed a time of 2:28 at the NJ State Triathlon (1500m swim, 40K bike, 10K run). But triathlon season is about over for me now and as my foot problem has improved I've once again started putting in some good weeks of running. I've been managing about 50-55 miles/week for the last three weeks. I've got my weekend long runs up to 20 miles and I'm looking forward to the Mount Desert Island Marathon on October 15th.
I decided, at nearly the last minute, to register for the Wineglass Marathon next weekend and use it as a training run. So I don't plan to race this marathon. My goal is to make it an easy training run for the first 22 miles and then ease off for the remaining 4 miles (with lots of walking if necessary) so that I can recover in a couple days and get back into my training schedule again. I did this at the New Hampshire Marathon last fall and it worked out great. Despite the cost and travel involved, I think using another marathon for training is a great way to get in the long training runs. Having the other runners, crowd support (no matter how sparse), aid stations, and everything else makes for a great dress rehearsal....all without the stress of having to perform well.
I recall there are a couple other people here registered for the Wineglass Marathon...Oldmanrunner and Rickshaw...correct? Anybody else? What finish time are you planning for? I'm hoping to get to the 22 mile mark in 3:18. Anything faster and I'll regret it the following week.

Heh, join the club of the pathetic summer trainers! Actually, it sounds like your training was still pretty strong despite your injury. It sounds like you were able to fall back on your swimming and biking pretty effectively. Yet another reason to like the triathlon.
While I think you're a little crazy for doing a "practice marathon" two weeks before your goal race, I'm psyched that you're doing Wineglass. OldManRunner and I will indeed be there. I'll email you some contact info so we can try to meet up. We'll both be hoping for around a 3:30 finish time. We've both been pretty bad about our training, though, with a pretty half-assed approach as compared to our preparation for previous races. But at least there should be some nice autumn leaves to admire during the death march!

Sounds like we could run as a group called "The Pathetic Strider's Club." It'll be great to see you two at the marathon. I'm looking forward to it.
Actually, I don't really have a goal race this year. I expect the MDI Marathon on 8/15 to be too challenging to try to PR so I won't try to "race" that one either. My in-laws have a house on Taunton Bay 30 minutes from the start (Bar Harbor). We spend two weeks there every summer so it's familiar territory. The house is empty this time of year and so my twin daughters (my support crew) and I will have the house all to ourselves for a few days.
Again, I'll treat it more or less like a training run and just go out easy. If all goes well, I might be able to push it a bit more during the Marine Corps Marathon two weeks later on 8/29. I'm taking it week by week and assessing whether or not my fitness is improving. I've not done an ounce of speed work so far and very little tempo training. I definitely don't have the same endurance and speed that I had at this time last year. So I don't have great expectations or aspirations to PR. I'm looking forward to doing these marathons just for the experience. If the experience is anything like what I had at the New Hampshire marathon then it should be a blast.
