 Cold Weather Running
Submitted by Rickshaw :: Fri Dec 17, 2004 11:44 am
When temperatures drop below the freezing mark and snow begins to fall, some runners hang up their shoes for the season. But for those who keep running outdoors, the New Orleans Times-Picayune has a few tips for running comfortably in cold weather. One good bit of advice: drink extra water. Winter's lower humidity means you'll see less sweat, even though fluid loss is the same as during the summer months.

Outfitting yourself with layers and warming up with stretches are also important for cold weather running. Layers help keep moisture away from the body, and you can easily remove a layer if you get too hot. And stretching may be especially important when it's cold outside, due to the extra temperature-induced tightness in the running muscles.

The thing that bugs me about cold weather running (besides the fact that I'd rather be cross
country skiing) is mucus. Wiping my nose on a glove makes the glove really disgusting after a few
minutes. The Norwegion snot shot takes some effort and doesn't always work very well (especially
if the aim isn't too good.) And carrying tissues in a pocket is too much fiddling. I almost wish there tissue
stands along the running route, kind of like they have water stations in races.

After quite a few years of practice I find "snot rockets" to be pretty effective, although you're right - you do always run the risk of a misfire that lands back on you. My running gloves get laundered pretty regularly.

I've never mastered the snot rocket either. Today I had some major runniness problems, so I blew my nose on my hands, then wiped my hands on some grass. Yeah, that was gross. At least it's better than using your shirt as a handkerchief.

I got an email from my mom in Kingston, Ontario, where I'll be in four days or so. I guess the weather this morning was -36 Celsius with windchill (about -32 Fahrenheit). Not sure how much running I'll be doing outside when I'm back.. :/

My God! They ought to pass laws against that kind of temperature. I don't even think my thermometer reads values that low.

Windchill, smindchill. Wear a windproof clothing and your back on the regular thermometer.
