 New York's Most Memorable Runners
Submitted by swrittenb :: Tue Dec 14, 2004 11:34 am
Every major marathon boasts a list of past heroes-- names that will always be connected with the races that earned them fame. Boston has 61-time finisher (and 2-time winner) Johnny Kelley. But what about New York? Metro Sport takes a look at the most memorable runners in the history of the New York Marathon. At the top of the list: Grete Waitz, the Norwegian schoolteacher who won the race nine times.

What about the legally blind woman that ran in the elite women's group last year? I think she should be considered. Anyone remember her name? As I recall she's an elite runner in shorter distances but this was her first marathon.

That was Marla Runyan. She's a pretty big name in distance running, and is probably well known in many places outside of New York. I think she may have been in the Olympics this year too, I can't remember.
