training logs
Posted: Tue Dec 21, 2004 11:54 am
When I first started running, I just did it sort of at random, and didn't ever make any notes about how the runs went. After a while, I started writing down the date, distance, and time of my runs in a word processing doc. Eventually I switched to use a pretty detailed spreadsheet I found online that tracks the basics plus weekly and monthly mileage, heart rate, weight, personal bests, and even generates pretty graphs and charts from all the data. Yeah, I'm a geek. I'm just curious what methods other people use to keep track of their running details. Any other spreadsheet nuts like me?

I use a paper log to record just the basics. Distance, time, type of run and a notes section where I can scribble whatever. The end of the week I have a roll-up area where the week is totaled (time, distance) and also a YTD rollup of time, distance and also a spot to keep track of mileage on my shoes. It works for me I guess. I just don't trust myself to remember everything accurately by the time I get around to logging it on a computer. Also, it's a bother to schlep around my log book in order to (redundantly) enter the info on my computer. Yes yes, you can get better analysis and nice graphs, but I don't care. :o)
FWIW, I
am
a spreadsheet nut. I'm a sales analyst and Excel is the bane of my existence. I use it to do my financial budget at home, but that's it. I leave it at work. :o)

I use the online ones since i can barely fill in a spreadsheet someone else created, much less create or manipulate my own. i like the sites that have weight, heart rate, shoe trackers, graphs and all the bells and whistles...

I use the PC-based Runners' World subscriber give-away one that I downloaded for the first time several years ago. They stopped providing end-user support over 4 years ago because it apparently wasn't fully Y2K compliant, but I have yet to have any problems in that respect. However, I've lost a mother board and a hard drive each since I started using it, and didn't have back up either time. I was really bummed this most recent time because you aparently can no longer download it from RW, but fortunately for me the tech who worked on my computer was able to retreive the installation file, so although I lost all my electronic history, at least I have the application back again. And I did have hardcopy of my 2004 log YTD. It's a nice, simple application. I just wish it tracked shoe mileage, and it would be perfect for me.
Computerized works best for me, since I work from home and spend most of my time in front of the computer during the day unless I'm out running.

If you're looking for a new computerized log, definitely check out the one from David Hays. It's a free Excel template, and it tracks EVERYTHING. Maybe too much, really. But if you're a spreadsheet geek, it will definitely get you excited.

That Excel workbook is something! My new years resolution (one of them anyway!) is to use that spreadsheet for '05. I really don't want to go back and plug in all of 2004's data, so new in 2005 should be good. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I stumbled across this one when I thought I was going to be unable to get another copy of the RW log, and was looking for a replacement. It's pretty overwhelmingly comprehensive, and tried it for a few days, but for whatever reason I never liked it all that much. To each their own, though.

I've been using a spreadsheet for the past three years that I created. It's not as complicated as the one you provided the link for but it works for me. I am going to check out the one you provided and see if it adds anything significant that I may be missing. If so, I might change over.
