Ugh oh... I think I gained about five pounds just today. So many cookies. And who knew egg nog was fattening??? Now I need to do some nice long runs to burn off a few thousand calories...

I'm up 2 pounds this week and need to control my weight gain as I'm leaving for a 12 day vacation in a week and expect that I will probably put on a few pounds while I'm away. It's starting to snow here on LI and they are calling for up to 5". Maybe I'll have to shovel the snow which will be good exercise.

I got a solid 16 miles in this morning, and feel much better. Actually, when I checked the scale today, I'd only gained one pound since last week. Maybe the rest was water weight. :-)

This actually raises a question that's been rolling around my brains for awhile:

I run between 25-30 base mpw. Therefore, going by the "100 calories/mile" theory (which my HRM agrees with), I burn between 2500-3000 calories per week, not to mention calories burned as muscle grows when I'm not on the trails or road.

Question being: How many calories per day would I consume to best suit the intensity of my workouts? I'm sure I could fumble around on line to find something, but I thought this might make for interesting discussion before I hail the Almighty Google.

The amount of calories you need to take in to maintain your weight is very much a function of your size, age and weight. A calculator is available at http://www.wvda.org/calcs/mcals.htm. When putting in your level of activity I recommend excluding your running since you know how many calories you are burning while running and can therefore add it in after. For instance, assume that for a sedentary person your height, weight and age you needed 2,000 calories to maintain your current weight. Further assume that you are burning 2,800 calories a week while running. You would need to eat 2,400 calories (2,000 + (2,800/7)) a day to maintain your weight.

I actually lost a pound over the Thanksgiving holiday. But I ate worse over this Christmas holiday (well, about the last week really) and I have been afraid to jump on the scale. I know I gained, I just don't want to know how much right now. If I ignore it, it will just go away, right? :o)
