easy/hard days Posted: Tue Dec 21, 2004 5:50 pm

The training widsom I've seen most places says to alternate easy and hard training days during the week for best results. So if you do an especially long or difficult workout one day, you'd always follow it up with an easy shorter run the next. But I've seen a couple of books (Daniels maybe?) that acutally suggest stacking your hard days back-to-back. Their theory is that the negative effects of a hard workout don't peak until the second day after, so you should do two hard days in a row.

I tried the back-to-back hard days method for a while this summer, but was left feeling pretty fatigued most of the time. I was also running more mileage than I ever had before, though, so it's hard to know what the cause really was. Anyone else tried back-to-back hard days and had it work for them?

Well, I haven't gone back to check the book to refresh my memory, but didn't Daniels advocate back to back hard days only as a means of getting in quality training when you had one or more races scheduled during a week and needed to be fresh for those races? Wasn't it something he developed for cross country coaches for their use during the race season?

My body can't stand back to back hard days without really getting badly beaten up and needing multiple sequential rest days, and even then I'm a wreck for several days, so for me it's just not worth it!
