your next race
Posted: Thu Dec 23, 2004 5:05 pm
I see a lot of people with plans for spring races mentioned in their signatures. When's your next race? Is anyone planning anything before the end of winter? Personally I'd love to find a nice 5K or 10K, but all the race organizers seem to have packed up and left town until February at least. Anyone else in the same boat?

maybe it's time for the first annual Worldwide Runworks Treadmill Trot..
5 miles? 1% grade? everyone posts their times and splits.
first place gets a free 1 year membership to runworks and bragging rights for a year. (or maybe all of their posts have a cool trophy icon next to them)
i'd also lobby for a "most consistent" award. (lowest standard deviation of the mile splits)
i think i might have a shot at that one...

My racing season starts on March 3rd with the Little Cow Harbor 4 Mile Race in Greenlawn, NY. Next is the Suffolk County 1/2 Marathon in late March and then the LI Marathon (or 1/2 marathon if my training doesn't go well over the winter) in early May.
I like the idea of a Runworks Treadmill 5 Mile Race. This may be a way to get more people involved.

How about "The First Half" here in Vancouver, the day before Valentine's Day, Feb. 13. Great course, taking in Stanley Park, the Seawall and English Bay. It's put on by the Pacific Road Runners:
www.pacificroadrunners.ca,
and the entrey fee is $27 US ($45 with the Nike Dri-fit t-shirt). But it might be sold out--even though it's in February, it's really popular and the number of participants is restrictied. The Vancouver International Marathon
www.adidasvanmarathon.ca
on May 1st is still open. It features a lot of the same ocean shore scenery, and then some. There's also a half-marathon, with a course similar to the First Half. It's more expensive--unless you register before Dec. 31, it will cost you at least $58 US for the half and $71 US for the full.
I hope to break 1:50 in the First Half and 3:45 in the marathon, qualify for Boston, then who knows...starting running ultras?

If somebody donates a treadmill, then I'll sign up for the Runworks 5 miler. Otherwise I'll have to do it at the track, and dodge those wrong-way runners all the way.
Actually, I kind of like this idea. Everyone does their fastest 5 miles on a treadmill or track, sometime between now and New Year's, and posts their times here. Winner gets the "2004 Runworks 5 Mile Champion" forum rank, which will appear underneath their name in all posts. Age group winners get a kiss from onyourleft. All entrants receive a comemmerative email. Or something...

You're more than welcome to fly to NY and use my treadmill.
I would think that most of the wrong way walkers have retired for the winter.
Set up the race and the rest of us can publicize it. Think about it, no etrance fee and a virtual t-shirt for every finisher!

I too pretty much have my year planned out. These are the races I'm planning to run; though there are others that I may run depending on how my training season is going. Keep in mind, I don't necessarily "race" all of these but incorporate some of them into my weekly traiing schedule as either an easy run or tempo run. It also helps if I can get at least 9 NYRRC races completed this year so I can qualify for the NYC Marathon the following year.
March - NYRR 8K/USA Mens 8K Championship
April - Brooklyn Half Marathon
May - Queens Half Marathon
May - Vermont City Marathon
July - Bronx Half Marathon
July - NYRR Dash and Splash - 5M (everyone get's free admission to Lasker Pool in Central Park after the race.
August - Manhattan Half Marathon
August - Continental Airlines 5th Avenue Mile
September - ING New York City Marathon Tune-Up (18 Mile)
October - Staten Island Half Marathon
November - New York City Marathon

I've heard the 5th Ave Mile is a pretty exciting race. I've been interested in doing a mile race for a long time, but they're so few, and they seemed to be so stacked with "good" runners that I'm afraid I'd embarrass myself. As it is, my one mile PR was a split from a 5K, and I've never run an all-out mile.

The 5th Ave Mile is broken into sort of "heats." The men and women run separately. And if I remember correctly, the runners are grouped by expected finish time in one minute intervals (sub 5:00, 5:00-6:00, 6:00-7:00, 7:00-8:00, and so on). So, if you think you can run say a 6 minute mile you can either join the 5-6 minute group and run near the back or the 6-7 minute group and run near the front. Or you can even jump in the 7 minute group and be one of the first to cross the finish line. The key is to position yourself at the start line so that the people in front of you aren't going to slow you down...or you'll have trouble hitting your pace and getting a good time. The groups range in size of course but 5th Avenue is about four lanes wide so you usually have some room to manuver at the start.
Each group is sent off about 10-15 minutes apart. I ran it two years ago in 5:58 when I wasn't expecting to do better than 6:15. It's interesting to see so many people cross the finish line totally spent.

I'll bet! Got any good stories? Vomit on your shoes?
Hmm, maybe I need to arrange a trip to NY.

I have yet to vomit after a race but I've seen it happen to others many times.
If you ever come to New York you'll most likely find a race being held in Central Park. If not a race, you'll find Central Park a magnet for runners (and all sorts of other athletic pursuits). The park is closed off to traffic during the weekend.
What I like about NYC and the New York Road Runners Club (www.nyrrc.org) is that there is a race nearly every weekend. The cold months have fewer races but as the weather gets better you can count on some sort of organized event every weekend...and sometimes on both Saturday and Sunday...and sometimes more than one event on the same day; in different parts of the city. Races generatlly have anywhere from 2000-4000 people. I know some people don't like crowded races but running through Central Park with so many people can be exciting. The NYRR club does a great job of organizing and supporting their events.

MFOX,
I'm looking to spend a week to two weeks in NYC in the spring (sometime from March to May). And I've found I can't travel anywhere unless there's a race I can do while I'm there....Any races you like that you'd recommend around that time of year? Pretty much any distance under a full 'thon.

Great! The New York Road Runners Club hasn't posted their entire schedule for 2005 yet (just January and Feburary) but they should be posted the entire 2005 calendar by the time you're ready to travel. Many of their runs are annual events and are held during the same month every year...and nearly the same week...with a few changes each year. So, based upon the last years calendar the races I've done, and expect to see again this year:
March
- Brooklyn Half Marathon (starts at Coney Island and goes to Prospect Park)
- 20 Mile Run/Relay (2 or 4 person relay).
April
- 8000 USA Men's 8K Championship and Men's Open 8K. Great chance to see some olympians race.
- NIKETOWN Run for the Parks (4Mile). In the past they've given each runner a Nike DriFit t-shirt with your bib number imprinted on the front.
May
- Queens Half Marathon - It's not very scenic...it's Queens for gosh sakes...but it has enough hills to make it a bit challenging
- Downtown Dash (2.66M) - great way to see downtown Manhattan
There are a bunch of other races during these months but these are the one's I'm most familiar with. Goto
WWW.NYRRC.ORG
and keep an eye on the calendar for the exact dates of these races. They recently replaced the 2004 with the 2005 calendar (January and February only so far) and forgot to leave the link to the 2004 calendar. But they have the links to 2002 and 2003 available so you can see the races, results, and photos.
And, of course there are lots of other races going on that organized by other clubs...so you'll never be too far from a race. Keep me posted on your travel plans and perhaps I can give you other tips for your visit. And, maybe we can hook up for a race while you're here.

MFOX,
This is a great help! Right off the bat, I like the sounds of the Brookyln Half, because all my friends live in Brooklyn and 1/2 is my favorite distance. A relay would be fun, but none of my friends are runners. My April is already pretty full with a couple shorter races here and the St. Louis Half. The Downtown dash sounds fun as well if i can hold out visiting that long. I'll definitely keep an eye on that calendar for updates and will keep you posted on which one(s) I end up coming for.
Thanks again!
Scott
