Did Santa stuff your stocking with new running toys? What did he bring?

My family got me some running staple supplies that were sorely needed. New socks, a new pair of trainers, and shorts
with pockets
! Woo-hoo!

the santas in my family wouldn't touch running gifts for fear that they would pick out the wrong thing. my mom told me she went into a running store, quickly became overwhelmed, and left almost immediately.

I received a little cash and went and bought a Timex Ironman watch at Wal-Mart for $33. Now that I'm running outside, I needed a way to keep track of my time. I'm bummed that I haven't a clue as to my pace or heart rate (can't afford a monitor) like when I used the treadmill. Anyway, it's a super little piece of technology for not very much. I was just thinking about how amazed if I could transport it back in time to junior high in the mid-70's. All they had were $300 Pulsar watches with red LED display (cheesy now, but cool at the time - my dad had one).

Ah, the red LED display... those were sweet! Mine was the kind that didn't actually display ANYTHING until you pressed a button, then it would show the time for a few seconds before going dark again.
I wouldn't worry about not knowing your heart rate, it's interesting but not essential. As for pace, could you try driving your normal running route in a car, and using the odometer to locate the position of each mile marker? Then you'd know it was a mile from your house to the bus stop, and two miles to the bridge overpass, or whatever.

I do exactly as Rickshaw describes. I know the mile markers for all my frequent running routes, and normally hit the lap button as I pass each one. At this point in my training it's not to see how fast I run, but to ensure that I'm running slowly enough. I'm supposed to be doing easy base building/maintenance, but I have a tendancy to start running too fast and then I'm too tired to enjoy the next day's run. I have a terrible sense of pace, and without this feedback every mile I can get all thrown off. If figure that it's gradually helping me to develop a better sense of pace, too, which is critical in racing.
So, how are you enjoying outdoor running?

Bob Glover's "The Competitive Runner's Handbook" that I picked out for myself and gave to my wife to give me. I'd seen it recommended on another forum. I'm about 50 pages in and so far it's pretty much the same as what I've read in every other running book. We'll see...
