Running Goals for 2005
Posted: Sat Jan 01, 2005 5:51 pm
My goals for 2005 are:
- Get over this damn Plantar Fasciitis and get back into more serious running again.
- Peak at 70-75 total miles for one or more weeks during marathon build-up training next fall.
- PR Goals: 5K < 20:00, 10K <43:00, Half Marathon <1:40, Marathon <3:30.
- Get my weight down to around 180.
So what are your goals for 2005?

My only important 2005 goal is to run 3:10:59 or better for the marathon. I'd also like to run at least as many miles as I did this year (2631).

Interesting, your 5K and 10K goals are more aggressive than your longer distance goals. Do you see yourself as a better short distance runner? By most accepted scales, someone who can run a 20:00 5K could also run about a 3:10 marathon, assuming adequate preparation.

The 3:20 Marathon goal is the minimum for a BQ...and so I'm not setting my sites any higher than that for now. Considering how inconsistent my running was this year I'm trying to be somewhat realistic.

2004 was my 'get over my damned achilles problem year' and I achieved that (by taking off 2 months=agnony & fat), running really little and slowly for 2 months (like 10 mpw), then building 5% per week with every other week super easy, like 50% of the harder weeks. I was only running 3 dpw. I know this is too little to build up a serious aerobic base, but my goal was to strengthen my middle aged joints and tendons and I, at least, need lots of time to heal and strengthen.
- Now I am up to 30 mpw (50 k actually) with no injury. {{Applause please since my family doesn't seem to share my joy!}}
- I only ran one race: I did a 1:33 HM in October 04 on a very flat course (I didn't really race, I just used it as an extra hard long run).
2005 is my racing year. In April I hope to get under 38 for a 10k (I did 38:24 in Fall 2003 right before I injuried my tendon), and then under 37 in a September track 10k race.
- Then I'll start training for a marathon in 2006. Never done one.

Three little words: Qualify for Boston.
Target: May 1, 2005, Vancouver: need to run 3:45:59.
I've run a couple of 3:45s before, just not in the last decade...

Wow, very impressive! Too bad you missed the virtual 5 mile race, you would have won easily.
I think I could do a 38 minute 10K if I were falling out of an airplane, but otherwise forget it.

That's a lot of people targeting Boston this year. Maybe we should create a Boston voodoo doll, and stick pins in it to slay our training demons...

Boston's race director probably has a mfox doll he's sticking pins into!

Well, then that's enough to teach me to never run Boston as a bandit again. I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I'm sorry...
